evidentiated by past marks

with rotten asphalt lain ahead of them
the drivers could
do nothing but argue of breadth –
such as    the
breadth of the horizon

– “the road is long”
– “the road is sweet”
– “the road is full of books written by heroes”

… and they argue onwards until daybreak

Drier, and of less putrid state,
the morning asphalt was less
a spawn of trouble and more
as a road ought to be

the drivers will probably best move
on, not to see upon those
others with whom they shamefully
addressed one broken night on the road
